I want to open a day spa but with the bad economy, should I?

Absolutely! I know a lot of individuals who have opened businesses in the bad economy that we're in today. As long as there is a need, there will be a solution! Make SURE there is a need before you invest any money!

What do I need to do to open a Day Spa?

You need to have a hair, or skin care license first. Then depending on where you live, there are different state laws but you have to be licensed by the state. Its a huge investment if you are not familiar with the beauty industry. Many spas close within the first year. Plus it takes about two to three years just to break even with the amount of money you invested. Thats two to three years where you have to pay everyone who works for you, pay the state, pay for products, without you getting anything. I would be real careful in this industry. You should work in one first to see how it operates.

Do I tip every step in a spa day?

I received a spa day for Christmas as a gift. It has 6 different treatments. Do I tip each person at each treatment? How much? Won't that become an expensive gift?Do I tip every step in a spa day?
You do tip each person. I'm a head concierge at a hotel and send people over there alot. The main question I have to know so I can answer the ';how much'; question is what are you getting done and in what city.Do I tip every step in a spa day?
No, you shouldn't need to. Either your spa will have one person who sees you from treatment to treatment, gets your drinks and a little lunch in the middle of the daya and generally treats you like royalty (higher end spas) or you will go from person to person. If you have the former you can give them the tip at the end of the day. If not you can leave a tip with the receptionsit. Either way each of the attendants doing your treatments will almost certainly get a little bit of the tip.

How much can depend... whenever I give gifts of treatments I don't have the salon put an amount on the gift certificate so that I can a) include a tip myself and b) not worry that the recipient knows how much each treatment costs. It depends on the service you recieve, how much you enjoyed it and (honestly) your age. For a full day service I probably would recommend at least $25.
Yes, usually about $5. Figure the total amount of the gift certificate, multiply by .20 divide your answer by 6, that's what each person would usually get. BUT check on the gift certificate, when I purchased a spa gift certificate for my daughter, the tips were included in the price.
No, at the end of the day you leave one tip. They divide it up by what treatments you had. Enjoy!! I am envious!
You have a choice, you could tip them a minimum amount of 2 dollars at each step and leave it at that or you dont have to feel pressured to tip them at all. Its your choice. Spas are for relaxation. Relax, enjoy and do what you please.

Here is a list of some of my favoriate day spas in LA. The problem is LA is very spread out so I have no idea where you will be.

Burke Williams: they have many locations in Southern %26amp; Northern CA. All of the locations have nice amentities such as jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, mist rooms that are female only so you and your mom can hang out there all day.

Glen Ivy: Also a few locations in S. California. Lots of nice amentities there too. They have this treatment called the grotto which is nice and you can do that with your mom too.

Go at 3:30 so you feel extremely relaxed. So you can go home and watch a movie. If you go the spa at night, you would waste all that relaxation trying to avoid sleep because any spa thing makes you sleepy.

I'm going to Cancun in August, b4 school starts, and I'm going there to relaxe. I'm going jetskiing, walking on the beach, Chichen iza etc. It's purely to relax. And my hotel has a spa. I'm a man with extra bagage. I've been wanting to do it(like massages), but I'm too selfconsious to do it in the US where most people have that perfect body. Would you do it? Spa days are wonderful. Like it or not the majority of the people in the world have ';extra baggage,'; so the massage therapists will not think anything about what shape you are in.

Most people in the US do not have perfect bodies, only the airbrushed fake people on magazine covers, don't kid yourself.

I know many men in all walks of life who get massages from race car drivers to fishermen and businessmen who find that it helps a great deal with their overall health and well-being. Many doctors and physical therapists recommend spa therapies in addition to medical therapies for their patients as it improves the bodies circulation as well as your breathing and stress levels.

When you get to your hotel, you can ask the spa employees to provide you with a spa menu and explain the various massages to you. You can also take advantage of other services such as hot tubs/Jacuzzis and steam rooms, which will add to the massage experience.

Enjoy every moment of your Cancun visit. The last massages my husband and I had were hot stone massages which are a combination of deep muscle massages and the use of heated smooth heat retaining stones to the massage strokes. I think this will give you a well rounded education to both help you acquire your dream or a spa, but also put you in a position to run it well as well as have some knowledge as to how people interact, which I think is why alot of people fail in their businesses sometimes. They can';run it and own it'; , but if your business is a service business, which a spa would be, it is best to understand people and how they think as well, so you will have the ';personal touch'; that grows the business.

I am not sure of prices, but there is a Red Door Spa in Litchfield Park at the Wigwam resort. It is fairly close to the Air Force Base. I have stayed at the resort before and it was really nice and not real expensive.

There's a really nice day spa at the Gaylord Palms hotel/convention center called Canyon Ranch. It was voted # 1 spa by the Orlando Sentinel's 101 Best list (very random that I know that, yes lol). It's in Kissimmee near Disney....on S. International Drive and Osceola Parkway I believe. Also there's the Ritz-Carlton Spa but I can't remember where that is. went here a couple of times for free because my mom works at this hotel. I love the citrus zest therapy it would be nice for him.

The other stuff they have smells very flowery and strong which my sis had and she came out smelling like a perfume shop. they have really nice old ladies that do it.

I have found that online and a few pool stores take weeks! I live in Baltimore, MD but either way, any suggestions would be great. Having a party for the 4th and just realized the cover is torn and waterlogged, as well as kinda grimy. Not sure what my options are. A standard temporary fix would be to remove the cover and tuck it away out of sight.

Spa covers are typically custom made, so that's why it takes so long. If you are desperate, you could visit a few stores and see what they have in stock. Something oversized will work clumsily.

I would go for the gold! I'd start with a body scrub, then a wrap, followed by a massage. After a cup of tea and a light lunch, I'd have a facial, manicure, pedicure, and then get my hair and makeup done for a night on the town!
Ok, Here it is.

First I take a naked swim in their pool with only women lifeguards in the pool. Second I take a series of mudbaths

where the women attendents massage me in a mud bath and then clean me off in the shower. Next I get a full body wash three times with something like sea salts, apricots,walnuts,kelp. Now I'm ready for a full Thai massage 2 people 2 hours. After that I relax with a special facial and a manicure and break for lunch.

After lunch I get a foot massage 2 hours with special Thai tea. Hair cut and style
I have never been to a spa and I am not into sweating for no reason but I think that it would be great to have a pedicure where my feet were massaged a lot. I have foot problems and rubbing them helps so I think professional hands would feel awesome. I also would like to try (and I'm absolutely fascinated by) acupuncture because I think it could help me with my aches and pains. Constant music playing all day without a single soul speaking to me (I really enjoy solitude). Oh yeah, I would love to be able to swim some laps in a pool. There is not one for at least 40 miles from where I live and I really miss the relaxed feeling of swimming to exhaustion.

white complexion-white sugar

brown complexion-brown sugar

*just moisten your face and scrub it on, 2 tablespoons on each palm would do--remember to scrub around the sides of your nose, on your temples, and around your jaw--scrub gently--we wouldn't want scratches, would we? :)

Rinse off gently after 5 or 10 minutes

facial cleanser

2 parts apple cider vinegar + 1 part water

*use a cotton ball to gently apply it onto your face, use a circular motion to smoothly apply it onto your cheeks, nose, forehead, and jaw. Be careful not to get it in your eyes--no serious damage but it will sting--rinse it off with water if ever. You can make a bottle of this and store it for use every other night before you go to bed. Leave it on for around half an hour or longer (overnight is recommended) then rinse with warm water.

body scrub

2 parts baking soda + part rock salt

*it is good to use a well-sized bowl to mix these ingredients very well. The resulting mixture is scrubbed onto moist skin--especially on ';dark spots'; such as the knees and the elbows--scrub it well but scrub gently. Leave it on for five minutes and then rinse off.

*since this uses rock salt, it can be a bit drying to the skin. see next item for the remedy.

skin and hair moisturizer

fresh coconut oil

*you got that right--just good coconut oil. After using the salt scrub, i suggest applying the coconut oil onto your skin--a few drops to a generous hand will be good for your entire body--even your hair (not too much for the hair though). this will moisturize your skin all-day long or all-night long. even your hair will have a soft bounce and a beautiful shine. it also has a gentle delicious fragrance that lingers around you. however, you should wash your hair with conditioner at the end of the day to remove the oil and then re-apply it afterwards--this keeps the oil fragrant and washes off dirt that has stuck to it.

facial cleanser again

cucumber slices + lime juice

*slice cucumber disks and score their surfaces lightly to release their juices. as for the lime, i suggest juicing them all using a juicer to extract their juice. this juice is then placed onto the cucumber slices which are now gently ';scrubbed'; onto the face. again, smooth on the mixed cucumber and lime juice onto your entire face. once you are done, wait for it to dry and then rinse it off with warm water.

*the same recipe can be used on dark spots too!

anti-wrinkle treatment

1 egg white+ oats

*combine the egg white and the oats, the latter in a quantity that will ';saturate'; the mixture with oats. this should form a mixture of sticky oats that are to be applied onto the face. spread the paste onto forehead creases, smile lines (around the mouth), and crow's feet (beside the eyes). allow to dry tight and then rinse off gently with warm water

Hey! thats my hood. Ok, Kelly's Spa at the Mission Inn is super nice, a bit pricy though. But if you are wanting a really pampered experience that would be it and it is in the Mission Inn which is always neat to go to.. A more cheaper way to go, but also nice is Serenity Day Spa, i have had a couple massages there and my sis goes all the time. They are right off the 91 around the Arlington offramp, Madison offramp area. Also, if she was willing to go outside of riverside, but not far, a day pass to Glen Ivy Hot Springs is the ultimate gift. It is in Corona i believe, off the 15, i think. I usually tip the girl who does my pedi $10. I assume there are 2 separate people doing the mani-pedi, so 10 for each, or if one person does both, maybe 15 for her. I've never had either of the other treatments, but I would guess 10-15 for each depending on how involved the treatment is. So I would figure on $50 total to be safe for all.

I want to start a salon/day spa...any advice?

I am in the process of closing on the building now. I do not have a cosmotology licence, but my business partner does. My part in the business it to provide the capital to fund the business and her responsibility is to manage and run the business. I know I will need an EIN number, a business license. Get some Mud Mask. I use saint ives, but im 13 i dont know what your skin type is. Pantene Pro V is great shampoo and sonditioner but get the moisture renewal kind. Use yogurt and oatmeal for your face and you can put mayonaise in your hair. It make it shiny. Sounds gross though, i know. HAVE FUN! :

toenail painting, parafin wax (can buy the tubs and wax @ walmart), face masks, a couple chick-flicks, soft pajamas (ulta has buy 2 for $10 right now...and they are awesome), a couple bottles of champagne (hey, the cheap stuff is good too. Especially mixed with a little orange juice for a mimosa!)

My friends and I did this last saturday night at my house and I had a Pure Romance consultant come out.

It was a really fun night and I learned a lot of things about my friends that I didnt know before! Everyone was relaxed and just had a great time!

What should I bring/wear to my first time at a day spa?

Go in very comfortable clothes unless you are going somewhere afterward then dress for that occasion.

You should be provided with a spa robe and slippers for your day. I recommend that clients not put makeup on as it usually doesn't look great after your massage, facial, or steam bath.

I also advise clients to leave their jewelry at home if possible since during the massage and facial necklaces get in the way.

If you are going out after you spa treatments, bring with you your change of clothes, make up, and if you like a special soap or shampoo, bring a small bottle of those as well since most spa's have shower facilities and they also usually have hair dryers and curling irons for clients to use as well.

Yes, I am a transgendered male and had been going to the spa for haircuts. I scheduled a day for my self when my hairstylist asked if I ever had a massage. I asked her if the staff would be uncomfortable if I came dressed as a woman. She said ';absolutely not a problem.'; I did dress and spent a half day with a mud pack, hot rock massage, body wax, hair styling, a makeup session and manicure and pedicure, all very relaxing. I've been to a gay day spa - It's not what you think! Its a spa where gay couples can go and wont get kicked out if you give your hunny a peck on the cheek during your nice jacuzzi soak. The responses here are good but the first thing that popped into my mind was an old lunch box from around her time with something familiar to her from the old days; inside there, your spa gift ; a small inspirational book; a small picture frame with a picture of just you and your Mom in it. A note card from you saying how much you love her and can't wait to spend a day of relaxation with her. Put the lunch pail in a box and wrap with a big bow - really you are already thoughtful and a great daughter so being a Mom , there is no wrong way; sounds like she already has the greatest gift a Mom could or would ever want, a thoughtful daughter. You can get body scrubs, eyebrow shaping, lashes dyed, facial peel, etc.

Look up all their services, and ask a knowledgable friend if possible.
$150 is gonna get the basic Massage/Mani/Pedi you'll be lucky if anything is left over and like the other person said check them out before you go make sure they are clean.

I get some young ones that don't seem to know about tipping people in service professions. $5 is about average, some figure 10 to 15 percent of cost. When I get $5 per half hour or more, that is a very generous person.

Don't be afraid to ask them to adjust the pressure (deeper or lighter). It's your massage and we want you to enjoy the experience or at least feel better when you come out.

To prepare a realy quick hair conditoner try this:

1 egg + 1 tsp vinegar + Glycerin

OR

1 egg + Honey + 2 tsp olive oil.

Massage this mixture all over and leave for 15 - 20 mins and then wash off with shampoo.

Brush your teeth with baking soda to gradually whiten them.

Body scrub: Mix sugar, olive oil, and milk to form a paste. Rub into dry skin, then wash off.

Soft hands: Warm up a little olive oil in the microwave and rub it into your hands and cuticles for a few minutes. Wash it off.

Soft feet: Put vaseline on your feet and cover with socks before bed.

Acne mask: Mix 5 or 6 aspirin with enough water to form a paste. Add a few drops of honey and apply to your face. Wait 10 minutes, and then wash it off.

Moisturizing mask: Apply straight honey to your face. Leave on for 15 minutes, then wash off.

Soft hair: Warm up olive oil in the microwave and put it on dry hair, making sure you distribute it evenly. Wrap in a towel for a half hour, then wash your hair.

Hair rinse: Dilute 1 cup of apple cider vinegar in a quart of warm water. After you shampoo, rinse your hair with that; it makes it very shiny.

A very very cheap recipe? Rinse your hair in cold water. It's free and it makes your hair shiny.

Ok its called Strawberry Mask Creme. Get a box of strawberries and then 1/4 cup of water and pour it in a bowl and get a spoon and then mash it up until its all soupy then appliy to face leave for 10 min, take off and then put a lightweight mosturizer!! Hope it helps!!

For deeper conditioning wrap a hot, damp towel around your head over the plastic, or use a hair dryer set to a low to medium heat setting.

1. Mix 2 tablespoons honey and 2 tablespoons milk in a bowl and stir until it gets creamy.

2. Heat it in the microwave for about 10 seconds, until it is warm but not hot.

3. Put it on all over your face and leave it on for 15 minutes. It will feel a little sticky.

4. Rinse with warm water.

5. Rub some fresh lemon juice on the skin. Leave it on for 2-3 minutes and rinse with cool water.

OR

1. Apply egg whites to your skin. Egg whites are natural astringents. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.

OR

1. Mix 2 tablespoons milk, 1 tablespoon flour, and 2-3 drops of lemon juice in a bowl and mix.

2. Apply it to your face and leave it on for 15 minutes.

Lemon and Yoghurt Facial Cleanser:

Mix 1 tbsp lemon juice with 2 tsp plain yoghurt. Apply on face, leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water.

Honey Facial Cleanser:

Prepare a mixture of 1 tsp of honey, 2 tsp of lemon juice and

1 tsp of yellow sugar. Apply with circular motions, leave on for

For the massage, you'll just have a towel on but you never expose anything private due to the way they turn you round. You'll have a choice of oils that they will use on you.

For the hand wax i'm guessing it's probably parafin wax where they dip your hand in it, allow to dry then you'll probably get a hand massage afterwards. It doesn't matter what you wear for this as it's just your hands that receive the treatment.

Well, I love Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa in Corona. The original Glen Ivy--it has been around since the 1920s. It's a magical place; you just have to go there to see how amazing it is. When you're on the grounds, it's like the rest of the world is far, far away.

I quit going to spas because of the sanitation issue. They never seem to wipe down their equipment to my satisfaction, just be careful and may sure they clean things before you use them.
The best one is Glen Ivy in the Brea Mall. Very peaceful, with good ammenities. I also like the Burke Williams in Sherman Oaks.

Burke Williams and the Ritz Carlton are my favs. Their people are very professional, and don't try to sell you products after the treatment. (I';ve found other spas allow their people to do that, and they can get kinda pushy)

Also, both Burke and Ritz have big spa rooms with saunas, steam rooms, and jacuzzis that you can enjoy after your treatments. You get more bang for your buck that way!

I used to be a major nail biter, and I got over it in the oddest way. I'm a freshman now, but when I was in sixth grade, I bit my nails constantly. So whenever I found my self biting my nails, I would bite my tongue. Sounds painful, right? But I definetly stopped the biting! So go ahead and get your nails done, but please, no color or acrylics. Totally not on a guy. There's nothing wrong with going and getting a manicure done with her, but acrylics and colour!? Don't be ridiculous.

A man's manicure is really to clean up the hands and nails. Just some nail trimming and buffing is required. No polish.
mail manicures are totally in!!! but acrylics and color, come on. . . I vote NO if you are taking a poll (to the color and acrylics anyway) and YES to the manicure. There are great color free polishes out there for nail biters that will deter you from biting, try one of those!

well gurl my BFF and i are to this school year is gonna be different we go to the spa every two weeks and get manicures and pedicures also a hour and a half massages and its great. After that we usually go get a refreshing drink and hit the hair salon but thats only when its the week of school like 1 day before. then we go to my house and go through all of our make up and whatever we need we make a list of the make up and go buy it. We try to keep up on the latest fashion threw the enternet and do our own styles too. We also mix and match and expirement different looks on each other to see if its rockable for me or her! Any ideas for a spa day at home?

Me and my little sister want to have a spa day before school starts. You know: facial masks, pedicure, scented candles, etc :)

But we really don't have that much money so cheap and easy things to do.Any ideas for a spa day at home?
Scented candles are not very expensive. I love them! I recently got some Yankee Candle votives from Target, and one of them is a spa scent.

Purchase some shampoo and conditioner-need not be expensive. The $1 bottles of Suave are just as good, and they have some nice scents.

You can get facial packets at Wal Mart for a dollar or so, and also look for the foot scrubs.

A manicure/pedicure set is not that expensive. An emery board, etc.

Polish is a necessity! Again, not expensive.

If you braid your hair while wet, when it is dry and you let the braid out your hair will be wavy/curly. You can also twist it and pin it with bobby pins until it dries completely.

I bet you could do the whole thing for $20. Just shop smart!Any ideas for a spa day at home?
Oh to have a sister! Some fun cheap beauty things you guys can do are:

1. make a sugar scrub, just mix sugar and body wash for great exfoliation. Then lather on the lotion!

2. For a face mask, make an egg white and beat it with a couple of drops of lemon juice until it's fluffy. It makes you skin feel great!

3.Heat up some olive oil and dip you ends in for really soft hair. Just make sure you wash it all out really well.

$. Get a crazy color of nail polish by NYC. There cheap and who doesn't love a fun color?
